A Hacienda full of History:
This renovated Hacienda located in the northern part of Izamal, Yucatan was owned in 1811 by Jose Santiago Contreras.
In 1861 there are only 25 habitants, of which 11 were men and 14 women. Of these, five men and a women were white people, the rest were indigenous. Only one could read & write.
From 1897 the owner was Nicanor Ancona y Lizarraga, there were 183 habitants.
In the beginning of the XX century, the Hacienda received workers from other regions of Mexico: families from San Luis Potossi and Sonora. Their children were born and raised in that same house.
In August 22, 1949, the image of the immaculate Virgin Mary, was solemnly crowned in the atrium of the Franciscan convent of he ancient city of Izamal. The Virgin Mary was named Señora de Izamal.
